The gods of horror films have once again been at work, this time delivering to us Paranormal Activity through the hands of Oren Peli.
Paramount Pictures will release the movie nation wide on October 16 after 1,000,000 fans went to Paranormalactivity-movie.com and demanded the movie be released everywhere. Paranormal Activity is the first ever major film release that was decided soley by fans.
This independent film is getting a lot of buzz aside from the interesting marketing approach. Paranormal is being called 2009’s Blair Witch Project, where similar camera work, undiscovered actors, and creative directors make the movies believable. Oren Peli , the writer, director, producer and editor for Paranormal, shot the film with a crew of three inside his suburban home in just seven days. A huge part of the movies appeal to horror loving audiences is the handheld camera shots, characters in a natural and believable setting, making it possible for viewers to imagine themselves in the situation. Because of the suspense and terror of the movie, Peli says “Reports of sleeplessness have persisted after every screening…”
The plot of the movie revolves around a young couple that buys a “starter” home in American suburbia, where they are disturbed in the middle of the night by a paranormal presence and forced into sleeplessness. They set up a camera in their bedroom to hopefully get to the bottom of their paranormal problem.
Paranormal Activity made its début at Screamfest, a movie festival held at LA’s Chinese theater, where it won Honorable Mention in 2007. Directors of the festival encouraged the director to submit his DVD to the editor of a horror film website, where they did nothing but praise and support the movie.
Eventually, all the buzz surrounding the movie got to Paramount Pictures where they picked up the movie and recently released Paranormal to the world..
If you are brave enough to go see Paranormal Activity, don’t go see it alone.
