Today on November 19th, 2009, I went to the Moreno Valley Campus and pulled some students aside to ask them what they thought about our lack of athletics, and which sport they would like to see played there on the campus.
The survey showed that pretty much all the students I asked were unhappy with a school just having education.
School is supposed to educate your mind, and most schools educate your body as well. But on this campus, the highest athletic activities available are walking and yoga classes. Sounds boring, what happened to the thrill and excitement of being in shape?
Most of the students I interviewed would like to see basketball mostly played on campus. One girl especially would like to see the boys play basketball; I wonder why? Even a student that doesn't like sports stated they would like basketball as well.
The two other popular sports out of the students' opinion were football and soccer. I actually think those are great sports to be played here. We have plenty of room on campus to put in either a soccer or football field.
Other sports that wished to be seen were softball, track and field, cross country, volleyball, tennis, and even badmitten.
So why not use up the empty space?
If anything, it will make the students happy, and it could benefit the school, as well to help them with their budget.
More programs equal more money for supporting the sport, but also for the use of education as well. They can use the money for more textbooks, paper, or anything for that matter to help the school.
Who wants a school for just a school anyways? Students like the challenge of multitasking between school and sports. They like being a part of something other than just getting good grades.
Sports keep you fit, and can help you relax and just have fun. Getting away from life for a little bit sounds nice, right? I mean who doesn't want that? Especially the benefits of being active.
Maybe one day in the future, Moreno Valley Campus will bring sports into the picture. Who knows, it can possibly happen when the Riverside Community College District splits its campuses apart in the near future.
So in conclusion, I still ask, why wouldn't you? The lack of on-campus sports just doesn't make any sense to me nor the students at the Moreno Valley Campus.
